Buried Discharge

Located near Bury this CSO provides an overflow for one of the town's main sewers, before it travels under the Irwell on its way to the treatment works. A lid upstream of the overflow chamber gave access to the sewer, one of the rails had dropped into the flow creating a fast deep section. Even though the chamber was only 40m downstream I didn't fancy walking the heavy flow.

After working my way down the overgrown riverbank I found the overflow's outfall and headed in. A short stretch of RCP lead to the overflow side of the chamber. Over the weir a penstock could be seen that connected to the rod from the roof.

Despite scouring the area I couldn't find the lid to the feature I was actually looking for. Maybe a return trip in mid winter when the vivacious vegetation has died back will yield better results.
